Whiplash Pain Can Continue For Years After The Injury

In the longest study ever performed on whiplash-injured patients (a study looking at the health status 17 years after injury), 55% of the patients still suffered from pain caused by the original trauma. (Accident Analysis and Prevention, 2002)

Isn't this incredible!

More than half of all patients that suffered a whiplash injury still had pain 17 years later. These car accidents cause considerable damage to the spine and neck. The muscles and ligaments are pulled or torn, including microtearing. Microtears are small tears in the internal structure of muscles and ligaments. It's like you take a piece of guaze and pull it. The gauze does not tear in two, but some of the internal strands of the gauze tear, lengthening the piece of gauze overall. If those tears are not corrected as soon as possible, they will scar. This scar tissue is abnormal tissue that may never function properly, even with massage, exercise and stretching.

The important take home of this is that all people involved in car accidents need to be examined by a doctor of chiropractic as soon after the injury as possible. The only way to ensure that the tissue heals properly is to start necessary treatment immediately. If you or someone you know is ever involved in a car accident and suffers a whiplash injury, please get evaluated by your chiropractor as soon as possible!

Asthma and Posture

A new study came out that observed specific postural adaptations that are related to Asthma severity. As a Certified Posture Neurologist, I am particularly interested in posture correction and find this to be very exciting. It could be that, since specific postures are related to the severity of Asthma, correcting these postures might decrease the severity of a patient's Asthma symptoms. Anyone who has been suffering from Asthma or anyone who's loved ones do, know how debilitating this disease can be. Controlling symptoms of this disease is the key to Asthma treatment.

"Our data suggest that severe asthmatic children present postural adaptations and muscle shortening that seem to be related to disease severity."

I am hopeful that further studies will give us more direction in natural treatments, avoiding the side effects of typical medications used to treat this disease.

Are You Exhibiting Symptoms of a Car Accident Injury? Tips From Our Manassas Chiropractor

Car accidents are notorious for causing hidden injuries, which are injuries with no outward symptoms, like bruising swelling or cuts. You may not even notice any symptoms until two or three days after your car accident. Our Manassas chiropractor can evaluate your spine to determine if you have any hidden car accident injuries.

Are You Exhibiting Symptoms of a Car Accident Injury? Tips From Our Manassas Chiropractor

The most common silent injury caused by car accidents in Manassas and Centreville is whiplash, which is a severe sprain and strain of the neck. This neck injury can cause headaches, blurry vision and upper back and shoulder pain as well as neck stiffness. Directly after your car accident, you may not notice any injuries or feel any pain. The next day, you may notice slight stiffness and pain in your neck. However, it can take up to three days for symptoms to fully manifest, and without treatment, you may experience symptoms for months.

Car Accident Injury Treatment from Our Manassas Chiropractor

Our Manassas chiropractor can diagnose your whiplash injury and shoulder pain and recommend a course of treatment to reduce your symptoms and restore the function of your neck. In the beginning of your car accident injury treatment, our chiropractor may recommend spinal adjustments on your cervical vertebrae and massage therapy.

Getting regular massages helps lower muscle pain while improving circulation and loosening tight muscles and ligaments. Chiropractic adjustments help restore the range of motion of your vertebrae by ensuring they are in their correct locations. When these two treatments are combined, adjustments last longer and pain relief is more readily noticeable.

We may also recommend Kinesio taping, laser therapy and ultrasound to stimulate soft tissue healing as well as corrective exercises and nutritional counseling. Combining multiple treatments often results in faster pain relief and increased rates of healing.

Car Accident Injury Treatment in Manassas

After your regular physician or emergency medic has cleared you of immediate, life-threatening issues, it is of paramount importance that you seek regular chiropractic care.

Obtaining car accident injury treatment in Manassas is prudent because auto accidents can have silent symptoms that do not cause problems until later, when the effects become more pronounced. A car accident chiropractor has the knowledge and experience to determine the best approach for treatment following an accident.

Symptoms of Whiplash Following a Car Accident

One of the most common types of injuries that can arise from a car accident is whiplash. Whiplash happens when the head is subjected to rapid, jolting movement sideways, backward or to the side. Common symptoms of whiplash include:

- Arm pain
- Blurry vision
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Lower back pain
- Neck Stiffness

Of course, since accident victims may experience silent symptoms they know nothing about, it’s always best to go to a car accident chiropractor as soon as you can after the accident.
